August 23, 2013 - Dean Matthew Diller has announced that Stanley Fish will join Cardozo School of Law as the Floersheimer Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law. Professor Fish will teach Constitutional and Statutory Interpretation.
“Stanley Fish is one of the leading figures in American higher education,” Dean Diller said. “He is one of the great authorities on the interpretation of texts, an expertise that has drawn him over the years to the field of law. He is an iconoclastic thinker who has developed a broad following across disciplines. I am delighted that he has chosen to make Cardozo his intellectual home. Our community will benefit from his teaching and insights and he will contribute to the intellectual vitality of our great law school.”
Professor Fish began his academic career in the English department at the University of California at Berkeley, then became the Kenan Professor of English and Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, where Professor Fish taught from 1974 to 1985 before becoming Arts and Sciences Professor of English and Professor of Law at Duke.
He was dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1999 to 2004 and served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at The John Marshall Law School from 2000 to 2002. Most recently, he was the Davidson-Kahn Distinguished University Professor Humanities and a Professor of Law at Florida International University.
Professor Fish received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and his MA and PhD from Yale University.
He is a prolific author, having written over 200 scholarly books and articles, and he is a contributor to “The Opinionator” blog for the New York Times.
